Abstract

APODACA PEREZ, Eva Caridad; ALVAREZ FIGUEREDO, Eduardo; MONTES DE OCA, Madelyn  and  FERREIRO, Yudix. Diagnosis and treatment of the traditional and natural medicine as an alternative in emergency and disaster situations. Rev Cub Med Mil [online]. 2014, vol.43, n.4, pp.515-527. ISSN 0138-6557.

The prompt performance of the health professional in an emergency and disaster situation is vital for the reduction of morbidity and mortality. In such a situation, it is impossible to make a thorough physical exam of patients, so the traditional and natural medicine techniques offer a wide range of therapeutic possibilities that is less harmful and more effective from the economic point of view on account of chemical industrial medication savings. This type of medicine also provides solutions to health problems of populations with their own traditions and ecological systems. This paper presented a holistic approached-case in which comments were made on diagnosis and treatment based on the application of the traditional and natural medicine, all of which represents another alternative in emergency situations and in disasters. To this end, databases and repositories were consulted; therapeutic texts and manuals as well as articles in Spanish and English published in the last five years were reviewed. In the emergency situation presented here, it is indispensable to guide ourselves by the Eight Rules or Principles, with the application of the highest practical usefulness pairs that express the nature of disorder and denote the condition of a patient with a view to treating him/her immediately and managing the clinical picture.

Keywords : traditional and natural medicine techniques; emergencies; disasters; alternative therapy.
