Abstract

Introduction:

This article is the product of a thematic review on the role of the main integrating discipline in the educational processes of higher education.

Objective:

To present the most significant findings enunciated in the specialized literature on the subject.

Methods:

The methodological strategy was systematized through hermeneutical methods and documentary analysis that allowed to study, interpret and collate the bibliographic material.

Conclusions:

The main integrating discipline is the backbone of the training process, which responds to the logic of the profession, integrates the contents, methods and procedures of the other disciplines, with an inter and multidisciplinary perspective, in the search for answers to the demands of the domain of the modes of professional performance. Among its functions is the organization, systematization and integration of the contents that intervene in the process of professional training, both the subjects of each academic year (horizontal relationship) and the disciplines that make up the career (vertical relationship); design of scientific-methodological and labor-research work, depending on the solution of professional problems and the student's relationship with society through participation in social activities, which transform reality through scientific procedures, thus contributing to their training integral.
