Abstract

SOMOZA CABRERA, José; BANOS PINO, José Antonio  and  LLORCA RIEGO, Manuel Llorca. Energy Demand and Energy Efficiency in 26 Latin American and Caribbean Countries: a Stochastic Demand Frontier Approach. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2014, vol.152, n.2, pp.87-106. ISSN ISSN.

As to the application of stochastic demand frontier, an estimate of final power demand was obtained, as well as the efficiency of the sample countries (Latin America and the Caribbean) in the period 1970-2010. A power efficiency ranking among countries was developed, and it was possible to compare it with the pattern obtained when power intensity is used as an approach of the efficiency. The fact that power intensity does not always offer a reliable result to evaluate the efficiency of power final usage was proved. Ideal energy demand, as well as the corresponding CO2 emission volumes, and the energy saving potential, and the lessening of emissions resulting from the improvement of energy efficient of each country was determined, an information that may prove an important reference in determining voluntary goals of lessening.

Keywords : power demand; efficiency; frontier patterns.
