Abstract

MARTIN ASTORGA, Eglis. Nickel Industry in Cuba's Present Socio Economic Development.: Considerations as to an Industrial Policy. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2015, vol.154, n.1, pp.91-104. ISSN ISSN.

Historically, the nickel industry has played an important role in the country's socio economic development. Regarding the guidelines approved by the Cuban Communist Party's 6th Congress, a wide program of development is projected in order to contribute with the updating of the Cuban economic model. In this context, an increase in its productive capacity, the improvement of its international insertion, and the diversification of its production is expected; all of it as from the increase of the added value in the final product. Paradoxically, there is no industrial policy for its development; one that can display, in an integrated way, a strategy towards fostering the fulfillment of other socio economic activities in the territory, as well as the productive enchainment with other branches at national level. That is why the present article aims at performing a careful consideration on the nickel's industrial policy in the present context.

Keywords : socio economic development; nickel industry; industrial policy.
