The updating of the Cuban economic and social model has allowed business to diversify, and stimulated individuals and groups to use their abilities to start a small business in several sectors throughout the country. Guest houses and trades people have helped the service sector, especially tourism. They are having a local and regional impact which needs to be described and assessed for other small business opportunities to be identified. The research results were obtained by doing fieldwork through a survey to guest house owners and trades people for tourism in five Cuban cities. Both kinds of small businesses, their profit, and negative impacts are compared.

Keywords : local development; destinations; impacts; tourism.
