Abstract

CABRERA SOTO, Marian  and  LAGE CODORNIU, Carlos. Cryptocurrencies: What They Are and What They Claim To Be?. Econ. y Desarrollo [online]. 2022, vol.166, n.1  Epub Jan 01, 2022. ISSN 0252-8584.

The present work discusses the essence of cryptocurrencies: what are they and what do they represent at the current moment of development of the capitalist mode of production? It concludes that it is a disruptive technology but at the same time carries significant threats to monetary sovereignty and the regulatory functions of States. It is, essentially, a tool that deepens the finacialization of the economy and poses the danger of a new escalation of the neoliberal process: the privatization of the issue of money.

Keywords : central bank; money; financial markets; monetary policy.
