Abstract

HERNANDEZ, P.J.E; FERNANDEZ, R.F; CABRERA, A.L  and  RODRIGUEZ, M.S. ASSESSMENT BY ULTRASOUND OF THE GROWTH OF THE EMBRYO GALL AND THE EMBRYO ON MEXICAN CREOLE MARES. Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2009, vol.31, n.1, pp.46-49. ISSN 0253-570X.

Twenty mares were selected from an initial group of 100 in order to assess the growth of the embryo gall and the embryo during the first 60 days of gestation. Oestrus detection was carried out by the direct mount with a stallion, rectal palpation and confirmative ultrasonographic test. When a follicle from 35 to 45 mms long was identified, mares were submitted to direct mounting. The monitoring of the embryo gall growth started from 15 days post service up to the first 60 days of gestation by the use an Aloka ultrasound device with a linear transducer of 5.0 MHz. The gall grew with an average of 1.5mm per day, observed from the 15th to 60th days of pregnancy. The growth of the embryo's length on the 21st _ 23rd , 30th _ 32nd , 39th _ 41st , 48th _ 50th , 57th _ 60th days , was 9.5mm, 17.2mm, 23.5mm, 32.0mm, and 45.9mm respectively, resulting in an average of 0.93 mm/day. Taking into account the results obtained on the first 60 days of the Creole mares' gestation, it can be concluded that the growth of both the gall and the embryo is within the range reported on pure race mares and ponies. This is the first report on such parameters for the Mexican Creole mares.
