Abstract

PUELLO-CABALLERO, Liseth Paola; MONTOYA-CAMPUZANO, Olga Inés; CASTANEDA-MONSALVE, Víctor Alfonso  and  MORENO-MURILLO, Luz Mary. Characterization of the microbiota present in the intestine of Piaractus brachypomus (Cachama blanca). Rev Salud Anim. [online]. 2018, vol.40, n.2 ISSN 2224-4700.

The white cachama (Piaractus brachypomus) is a fresh water fish of high nutritional and commercial value in Colombia. However, little is known about its intestinal microbiota, when it is grown in aquaculture systems. In order to know about this topic, 50 white cachama samples were collected in different stages: juvenile, adult and fattening, in the municipality of San Carlos, Antioquia, Colombia. From the intestine samples, microbial counts, isolation and identification of microorganisms were carried out in different culture media. The isolates Aeromonas hydrophila, Acinetobacter baumanii, Citrobacter youngae, Citrobacter brakii, Enterobacter cloacae, Plesiomonas shigelloides, and Pseudomonas fluorescens were characterized and identified by the API 20E system (Biomeriux). It was found that communities of microorganisms belonging to Phylum Firmicutes and Proteobacteria coexist in the intestine. These results indicate that this fish has a microbiota that may be subjected to variations in the diet and the surrounding environment, among other factors.

Keywords : Piaractus brachypomus; white cachama; intestinal microbiota.
