Abstract

PELLICER, ROSA. Los Pasos Perdidos, by Alejo Carpentier:: Sysyphus's Vacations. UH [online]. 2016, n.281, pp.18-30. ISSN 0253-9276.

The article considers that the nameless feature of Los Pasos Perdidos's writer-character is that of an individual that pretends to be someone else, lacking will, who tries to fool himself and everybody else. The review of the function of some classic myths, most of all the references to Sysyphus and Prometeus, as well as the attitude towards those who surround him, confirm that the initiation trip did not suit himself in order for him to become the other individual he would have been. As he was not able to overcome his own limitations, as well as those of his cultural pertinence, the return to a primitive world is impossible.

Keywords : Alejo Carpentier; Sisyphus; Prometheus; Los pasos perdidos; classical myths.
