Abstract

VAZQUEZ ORTIZ, Yazmín Bárbara. Schafik Hándal: The New Popular Democracy and Current Challenges Faced by the Left in Government. UH [online]. 2017, n.284, pp. 177-194. ISSN 0253-9276.

The Salvadoran left-wing leader Schafik Hándal struggled for establishing democracy in El Salvador. His struggle had, however, two stages. First, he wanted to make necessary changes to society by means of revolutionary armed struggle. Afterward, he supported the Peace Agreements with the aim of changing capitalist system from the inside out. In this process, he always took into consideration such aspects as how to establish a democracy for everyone by necessarily changing the bourgeois democracy in his country and considering experiences gained by other countries in establishing socialism, and avoiding mistakes they made therein. This paper is aimed at examining such aspects.

Keywords : New Popular Democracy; Government; Political Party; People.
