This is a work on one of the research lines developed by the international project «The teaching of Spanish in the Spanish-speaking world». Its main area of study is the study of lexical richness. In this paper the results of a lexical richness test applied to a corpus of texts written by a sample group of 11 and 16 year old school students in Havana is presented and analyzed. The work not only meets the requirements of the project but also includes a review of the given requirements. The research also aims to show the importance of the study of idioms and the ability to recognize them in order to determine the indexes of lexical richness.
