In a context where the role played by a quality higher education for the sustainable development of the countries is universally recognized, ratified and expanded by the 2030 Agenda, the work aims to characterize the qualitative development of Cuban higher education throughout the six Decades that have elapsed since the triumph of the Revolution, grouped into three historical periods that have witnessed far-reaching qualitative systemic changes. In each one, the most relevant facts that make them up are identified and critical appreciations of the authors are included. The study was based on the analysis of national policy documents specific to the system, institutional results reports, and on the evaluation of the authors' experiences. The results contribute to the characterization studies of the evolution of the Cuban higher education system currently underway, as part of the research project "The development of university graduates of Cuban higher education: current assessment and perspectives".
