Abstract

GOMEZ JIMENEZ, Jorge et al. Reading and interpretation of statistical tables and graphs in high school: opportunities and challenges. Rev. Cubana Edu. Superior [online]. 2023, vol.42, n.2  Epub May 20, 2023. ISSN 0257-4314.

The reading and interpretation of statistical tables and graphs is a skill required for decision making and understanding of information in the social environment. This constitutes a necessity in high school education and its treatment in the teaching-learning process of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. This study aims to diagnose the needs for the development of reading and interpretation of data in statistical tables and graphs, to achieve this purpose, empirical methods were applied such as the analysis of official documents, discussion group, teacher questionnaire and pedagogical test to students, which revealed a contradiction between the guidelines set out in the official documents of the Ministry of National Education of Colombia, and the current state of educational practice in classrooms. The triangulation of the results allowed the extraction of potentials and weaknesses in the teaching-learning process of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, which constitutes a starting point to mitigate the detected gap.
