Abstract

DE LA FE MONTENEGRO, Carlos F  and  CARDENAS TRAVIESO, Regla M. Seed production of onion (Allium cepa L.), an experiences in Santa Cruz del Norte, Mayabeque. cultrop [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.4, pp.5-12. ISSN 0258-5936.

In consideration of the existing information about the qualities and behavior of the Caribe 71 variety, and its particular relevance to the development of the production of onions in Cuba, due basically to the lack of seeds, this study was conducted together with farmers in the CCS “José Castellanos” with the main objective to contribute in the characterization of the variety, and provide further evidence of the economic feasibility of their seed production at the level of peasant farms with minimal resources, generally available to farmers in the territory. Key results highlighted a wide characterization of the Caribe 71 variety from the morphoagronomic and valorative point of view, on the economic feasibility of seed production. It was founded that even when you need a large initial investment to acquire basically planting material and even when the crop needs specific care, these are not limiting for normal crop growth and development at the level of peasant farms, in accordance with country’s strategic policy aimed at increasing their production in the coming years in the peasant cooperative sector, so that constitutes an item that contributes partially to replace high import outputs for seeds. The results of the study suggest the conveniente of extending the work to a larger number of farms in the territory, including farms from other municipalities in the province with the conditions for the development of it, and to go deeper in agroecological alternatives more environmentally friendly

Keywords : onion; characterization morphoagronomic; seed production.
