FORRELLAT-BARRIOS, Mariela et al. Importance of physical exercise to achieve a healthy elderly. Rev Cubana Hematol Inmunol Hemoter [online]. 2012, vol.28, n.1, pp.34-40. ISSN 0864-0289.

Evidences from the study in elderly people with physical exercise routine practice show that the elderly can be an active and vital stage. To achieve better quality of life in it is essential to understand the health status of older adults. We studied 46 older adults attending the club of grandparents sponsored by the Institute of Sports Medicine. In this club, there was female predominance. They practiced tai chi and they have medical management control. Tests were performed such as complete blood count, cholesterol, triglycerides, total protein and albumin, serum iron determination and capacities, determination of ferritin and vitamin B12. 97.8 % reported having one or more diseases, the most frequent was hypertension followed by gastritis, heart failure and diabetes mellitus. 50 % of cases had not altered any of the laboratory parameters studied. We found no case with anemia. Only 13 cases showed changes in lipid profile. The incidence of toxic habits found was low: only 3 cases referred to smoke and other 3 referred alcohol intake occasionally. 67.4 % reported multivitamin use. The best credentials for a healthy old age are to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a practice exercise routine.
