Elhibin is a proteinase inihibitor obtained from seeds of Leguminosae. It is able to inhibit the leucocitary and fibroblastic elastase and also triptase. These enzymes play an important role in the aging and skin irritation processes, therefore, an specific application of Elhibin contributes to maintain the skin elastic, soft, glossy and moist. It also counteracts the inflammation and irritation caused by excesive exposures to the sun, the aggresiveness of chemical substances and other environmental influences. Taking into account these properties, it was decided to evaluate the inhibitory capacity of Elhibin on some proteolytic enzimes by using some colorimetric techniques that utilize the Congo red elastin and azocasein as specific natural substrates and the radial diffusion as a complement. In order to find new applications for Elhibin, assays of proteolytic activity inhibition were carried out in samples of serum from burned patients with kinetic or punctual behaviours and with alterations of the balance of proteases and their inhibitors and the corresponding discontrol of their physiological processes. The results showed inhibition of the elastase and trypsin activity depending on the concentration of Elhibin. This did not occur in the case of colagenase and a specific application helping to counteract harmful unbalances in the samples of burned patients. It was obtained inhibition of the elastase and trypsin activity over 30% in all the analyzed sera
