Abstract

VALDES MORENO, Jorge; CARDELLA ROSALES, Lidia; ROJAS PALACIOS, Genny  and  GOMEZ ALVAREZ, Ana María. Determinación de variables nutricionales y metabólicas en recién nacidos de bajo peso. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2002, vol.21, n.4, pp. 235-240. ISSN 1561-3011.

This paper was aimed at determining the metabolic and nutritional conditions of a group of low birth weight newborn infants from the gynecoobstetric ward of "Julio Trigo" Hospital. 73 cases were studied: 51 with normal weight and full term and 22 with low weight, 12 preterm among them. The studied variables: total and fetal haemoglobin, total proteins, glucose, lactate and glutamic piruvic, glutamic oxalacetic and lactic dehydrogenase activities, were determined in blood from the umbilical cord. The piruvic glutamic transaminase activity, the concentrations of total haemoglobin, lactate and total proteins were significantly lower among the low weight newborn infants. It was observed a significant correlation of proteins with weight. All this proved the existance of an inferior nutritional picture for low weight newborn infants.

Keywords : INFANT; LOW BIRTH WEIGHT [metabolism]; INFANT NUTRITION; MOTHER NUTRITION; NUTRITIONAL STATUS.
