Abstract

VANEGAS ACOSTA, Juan. C.; LANDINEZ PARRA, Nancy S.  and  GARZON-ALVARADO, Diego A.. Implementation of reaction-diffusion biological models using the finite elements method. Rev Cubana Invest Bioméd [online]. 2009, vol.28, n.4. ISSN 0864-0300.

Several mathematical models have been formulated to describe the biological formation of spatial-temporal patterns. These mathematical models are computationally solved using a wide set of numerical methods among which the finite differences method and the finite elements method are preferred. The aim of this work is to present the finite elements method implementation of a morphogenesis model, a pattern-formation model, and a cell-movement model. The results obtained are similar to those reported by other authors using other numerical approaches. This fact proves the technique to be suitable in the solution of these kind of models and supports our expectations for its use in the solution of complex biological models of growth and cell and tissue development.

Keywords : reaction-diffusion; biological models; finite elements method; numerical methods; mathematical biology.
