A descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study of 14 adolescents that gave birth at the Maternal Hospital of Palma Soriano, province of Santiago de Cuba, during the first semester of 1995, was conducted. The control group was composed of the same number of mothers over 20. There was a relationship between the conception of pregnancy and the marital status of the adolescents, and between the deficient economic situation and the low level of employment. All this brought about a lot of maternal and fetal complications due to anemia, threatened abortion, preterm delivery, high index of cesarean sections, and newborns with an elevated morbidity and mortality caused by disease of the hyaline membrane and hypoxia, among others.
