Cryptosporidium spp is a internationally distributed intestinal parasite that has been recently recognized as an important reason for diarrheas, malabsorption, and weight loss and as a possible life-threatening factor for inmunologically compromised patients such as AIDS persons. The purpose of this study was to show the caracteristics of this disease in a 24 HIV-positive patients who were admitted to "Pedro Kourí" Medical Institute Services in 1995 and 1996. Data were examined by ratio comparison test which revelaed that all the parasite-affected individuals belonged to the 4th HIV infection group. Diarrheas and weight loss were the most frequent clinical symptoms associated with such parasitosis in the 24 patients. The fundamental role of nurses in the prevention of this disease at the various levels of health care delivery system was also analyzed.
