A cross-sectional descriptive study of 55 patients with phlebitis admitted in the Intermediate Care Service of the "Gustavo Aldereguía Lima" Provincial Hospital, in the city of Cienfuegos, from January to February, 1997, was conducted. It was used a guide of observation to determine data of interest, such as: diagnosis, time of canalization, personnel that performed the puncture, number of effective punctures, localization, relationship with the administration of volume or irritant drugs, material used and age. The main diagnosis was cerebrovascular accident with 56.36 %. Graduate nurses performed the highes amount of punctures (60 %). Phlebitis was more frequent between 24 and 48 hours (47.27 %). The material used was mostly disposable (96.36 % of the cases). It was observed a prevalence of the age group 50-59. Phlebitis was located in the forearm region.
