Abstract
SORIA BELL, Belkis and RODRIGUEZ SAIF, Ángela J. Análisis de los aspectos psicológicos y sociales más relevantes en ancianos institucionalizados. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2002, vol.18, n.2, pp. 116-121. ISSN 1561-2961.
A descriptive longitudinal and prospective study was carried out in order to identify some psychological and social characteristics of the elderly institutionalized in "América Labadí Arce" home for the aged, in Santiago de Cuba from September to November, 1999. 100 of the 148 elderly were included in the sample for having no mental disability. Males and the age group 70-79 predominated. Living alone was the main cause of admission, followed by the poor filial care and the absence of relatives. Being concerned about their health was the most common psychological manifestation. Most of the elderly had adapted themselves to this institution and felt there like at home. Reference was made to the importance of the role played by the nurses as part of the team that takes care of the elderly, which may be synthesized on assessing the own conception of the surveyed persons, who considered the nurse as a synonym of safety, affection, preoccupation and painstaking care for satisfying their main needs, and as a personnel closely related to them allowing a positive exhange among them.
