Abstract

Herpes zoster is an acute infectious disease accompanied by neuralgia or pruritus sensation. A descriptive longitudinal study was made on the incidence of herpes zoster in "León Cuervo Rubio" provincial hospital in Pinar del Río province in 2001. To this end, 20 patients with herpes zoster out of 403 admitted to the maxillofacial service department were studied; sex, race, age, complications and sequelae were analyzed. Results were given as percentages. It was found that herpes zoster affected more Caucasian males aged over 45 years; the most frequent complication was post-herpes neuralgia and the sequelae were facial paralysis, long-lasting neuralgic pain and motor paralysis.
