A retrospective descriptive study was performed to assess the application of the nursing care provess to the infants from a health care area in Rodas municipality, Cienfuegos province, Cuba during 2001. By a simple randomized method, a sample of 114 out of a total of 228 infants was selected, who were applied the referred nursing care process. A form was used to collect the following variables: infant's condition at birth, morbidity by type of feeding and economic estimation of breast-feeding. The highest number of infants was normal newborns at birth and it seems that there was a relation between morbidity and bottle-feeding. Those infants who were exclusively breast-fed during their first four months of life showed low morbidity rates.
