Abstract
BERJAGA PERNIA, Luz. Vigencia del pensamiento nightingaleano en la enfermería profesional cubana de 1909-1925. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2004, vol.20, n.2, pp. 1-1. ISSN 1561-2961.
Information was searched in primary and secondary documental sources. Among the first there are studies on the work of Florence Nightingale and on the history of universal nursing. As regards the second sources, journals and reports, which were official organs of associations to which Cuban nursing personalities belonged, were consulted. Their academic records and some historical documents from the archives were also reviewed. 2 fundamental stages of the nursing practice in Cuba were established: one known as the preprofessional stage that takes into consideration the survival care as a first approach to the nursing work, understood as the care given by women in the domestic space, and the other stage, the professional, where a series of changes get nursing closer to the profession canons. The present article deals with the second stage, in which the historical figure of Florence Nightingale, his theoretical thinking , and his repercussion on the universal context, where the Cuban nurses Margarita Nuñez, Martina Guevara, Pelegrina Sardá and Hortensia Pérez, play their role, are stressed in order to make some considerations on the force of Nightingale's thinking in the exercise of the profession and nursing teaching, starting from the performance of some of the above mentioned Cuban nurses..
