Abstract

Alcoholism is a habit linked with the life style and the material conditions of the persons. A longitudinal and descriptive study on alcoholism was conducted aimed at assessing the knowledge degree a population nonidentified as alcoholic has about this habit. From a total of 115 males, a sample of 60 males aged 15-69 from the family physician's office No. 197 of "Hermanos Cruz" Community Teaching Polyclinic, in Pinar del Río, was taken at random. The study was carried out from January to May, 2003 and, as part of it, a survey was done that allowed to know about aspects such as age, frequency of the ingestion of alcoholic beverages, damages caused by alcohol and ways to obtain information on how harmful this habit is. The main results were that most of males that drank alcoholic beverages were 15-30. They expressed that alcoholism was a disease that brought about economic problems, arguments at home, gastritis and arterial hypertension, and that the ways through which they receive information were the television, nurses and physicians. The data obtained were expressed in percentages. It was concluded that these results may contribute to develop even more the potentialities of the basic health team for the prevention and treatment of this disease.
