Garlic is one of the plants recommended by the Ministry of Public Health for its favorable effects on health, provided that it is not excessively used. 80% of the patients that are annually admitted in the cerebrovascular ward of "Dr. Agosthino Neto" Hospital have a diagnosis related to headache and hypertension. A descriptive and prospective study was conducted from June to September 2003 aimed at showing the benefit derived from administering garlic tincture to these patients. It is stressed the acting of the nursing personnel since the physician authorizes it. The nurse may administer the traditional treatment without being indicated again. The cost of the conventional drugs used is evaluated. The universe of study was composed of 100 patients divided at random into 2 groups of 50 individuals each. One group was applied the garlic tincture and the other the conventional treatment. The headache due to hypertension was cured in 72.5 % of the patients with garlic tincture, whereas the same result was attained in 70.8 % under the conventional treatment. It was proved that headache and hypertension were improved or cured with garlic tincture in most of the patients in 15 or 30 minutes in relation to patients treated with conventional drugs in the same time. It was concluded that garlic tincture is valid for treating headache and hypertension and that it is also much cheaper.
