ACOSTA GONZALEZ, Magda et al. Educative diagnosis of smoking in health workers. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2961.
Smoking is an important cause of damage for health that may be prevented and avoided. Both, the physician and the nurse play a significant role as modulating agents of the health improvements and their advices are milestones in the changes occurred in the life style of the sick and healthy subjects. A descriptive cross-sectional study was undertaken aimed at determining individual characteristics of behavior related to smoking and at classifying their risks according to diagnostic features. The sample was composed of 58 workers of the Institute of Cadiology and Cardiovascular Surgery of Havana identified as smokers. A survey including variables such as stages for the change, physical addiction to nicotine and the presence of associated risk factors was done. The highest percentage of smokers was found in the nursing staff. More than half of the smokers (58.6 %) were in the preparatory stage for the change, with a mean dependence to nicotine in almost the half (41.1 %). Just a little more than a fourth presented associated risk factor (30.7 %). The predominating diagnostic characteristic were the smokers in the preparatory stage with low risk (30.7 %). It was concluded that most of the smokers were in the preparation and contemplation stages for the change, with little to moderate dependence to nicotine, and without associated risk factor, which allowed to classify them as low risk.
