Abstract

LESCAILLE TAQUECHEL, Marlina. Relation of the ethics of care and the nursing models to the person and his dignity. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.1. ISSN 0864-0319.

It is very important than the nursing personnel knows the right of the persons to be respected or to respect the persons' dignity, mainly in the daily attention of the patient. This paper is aimed at reflecting on and analyzing the concepts of person and dignity and at relating them to the ethics of care and to the nursing models to emphasize the interrelation existing among them. The person is considered as a whole with physical, psychological, interpersonal and social aspects in the search of equilibrium and harmony, and he is, at the same time, a unique beign capable of developing and satisfying his need of help. The patient's dignity and the right to his private life should be respected during nursing care, as well as his culture and values. The ethics on caring is based on respecting the patient's suffering and on being sensitive to his pain. A conceptual model for the nursing practice identifies the essential elements of practice, theory and the nursing values. Nursing is exercised with the person, in a full dialectic interaction. The content of the nursing models reflects the attention the person deserves, his health, the infuence on the environment and his well-being, starting from the full respect to his decorum. The ethical principle of respect to the patient's dignity is legal and it is a moral imperative for the Cuban nurses and males nurses.
