Abstract

LABARRERE CRUZ, Yureisi; CASTRO LOPEZ, Frank W.  and  GONZALEZ HERNANDEZ, Gretel. Benefits of the high frequency ventilatory support in the newborn. Rev Cubana Enfermer [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2961.

High frequency ventilation is a new modality of ventilatory therapy that is very useful in the neonatology services, since it has many advantages for the newborn with complex problems. A retrospective study was undertaken among the neonates that were assisted with this modality at the neonatal intensive care service of “Ramón González Coro” Gynecoobstetric Hospital from 2002 to 2004. The newborns that were ventilated in the period the research was made were considered as the universe of study. The sample was composed of the 17 neonates that were assisted with HFV due to severe respiratory disorders. The aim of this study was to spread the advantages of this new procedure. High frequency ventilation was more applied in preterm newborns. The most repeated medical diagnoses in relation to this technique were hyaline membrane disease in 49.1 %, and airway obstruction in 41.2 %. Acquired bronchopneumonia, which was present in 17.6 % of the sample, was the most reported complication. Children survival related to this type of ventilatory support accounted for 70.6 %. It was demonstrated that high frequency ventilation is an alternative of safe ventilation, and that it is very effective when it is properly indicated and nursing care is strictly applied.
