Abstract

MENDOZA CUEVAS, Ariadna  and  NAZCO TORRES, Julio. Exams for atribution of Sevres porcelain by X-ray fluorescence in Havana museums. Nucleus [online]. 2009, n.46, pp.11-20. ISSN 0864-084X.

ABSTRACT Analyses with X-ray fluorescence on Sèvres porcelain were performed in order to determine criteria that may support the attribution of special pieces from the scientific examination. Multielemental chemical analyses of decoration colours, marks and glazed porcelain body were related to specific historic information about used materials and procedure for Sevres French manufacture. The used portable XRF spectrometer allows non destructive and in situ studies of Havana's collections with adequate sensibility for this application. Collections of Havana City Museum, Decorative Art Museum and Napoleonic Museum and some pieces of different origins were studied. Non typical pigments used in Sevres enabled to identify non genuine Sevres decorations while cluster analysis on porcelain body (glazed paste) helped to distinguish Sevres and «surdecor» Sevres porcelains from non genuine Sevres-style porcelains.

Keywords : pigments; porcelain; Xray fluorescence analysis; cultural objects; portable equipment.
