A study on the behavior of leprosy in the province of Matanzas from 1992 to 1996 was conducted. The distribution of the cases notified by municipalities in different years was analyzed. It was proved that leprosy is not a health problem in Matanzas. The highestrate was reported in 1992. The municipalities of Matanzas and Cárdenas had the greatest number of cases, and in the latter it was observed an increase in 1996. Only there territories did not notify the existence of leprosy patients during the 5 years under study. Emphasis was made on the importance of putting into practice the leprosy control program above all at the primary health care level
