Abstract

A descriptive, direct and cross-sectional study of the adult male population from 4 family physicians´offices of the "Angel A. Aballí" health area, in Old Havana, classifid according to their alcohol consumption, was conducted aimed at evaluating some knowledge and attitudes regarding alcohol and alcoholism through a self-applied questionnaire. It was found a low level of information on some harmful effects of alcohol, as well as on its impact on sexual function and suicidal tendencies, and a poor perception of alcoholic risk associated with the patterns of excesive consumption. There was a predominance of myths about the use of alcohol as a psychosexual stimulant, medicine, food, or as a useful substance to fight cold.
