Abstract

QUIRANTES HERNANDEZ, Alberto et al. Programa piloto municipal "mejorar la calidad de la vida del diabético".: Resultados sobre mortalidad, complicaciones y costos en la diabetes mellitus. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2000, vol.16, n.3, pp.227-232. ISSN 0864-2125.

The first results of the program "To improve the quality of the diabetic´s life", which is based on a close interrelation between the primary and secondary health care levels, as well as on an assistance method that propitiates the fulfillment on the part of the patients of what we have called The 7 Laws of Success of the Diabetic Patient are shown in this paper. This program has been implemented in the Cerro municipality of Havana City during the second semester of l997 and throughout 1998.The time of application of the program is compared with a similar period of time immediately before it. In the previous stage, the diabetics living in Cerro municipality were 31,8 % of the dead due to this disease at the "Dr. Salvador Allende" Teaching Hospital, whereas after the implementation of the program they were only 9,1% of the total of dead diabetics. The death of the diabetics decreased 41 % after the application of the program in the whole municipality. There was no need to hospitalize 91 diabetic patients, 89 of them (97,8%) from Cerro municipality, which represented a saving of $25 705.87. Due to the effectiveness proved by this program, its application is recommended in all the municipalities of the country
