Abstract

GARCIA MIRAS, Ramón; GONZALEZ VALDES, Jesús Marcos; GALLEGO RAMOS, Jany  and  VELAZCO BOZA, Alejandro. Norplant: cuatro años de experiencia. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2001, vol.17, n.2, pp. 137-142. ISSN 1561-3038.

A prospective study was conducted with 310 patients that attended the Department of Family Planning at "Eusebio Hernández" Gynecoobstetric Teaching Hospital and that used the Norplant subdermal implant as a contraceptive method from June, 1995, to December, 1999.Criteria of selection, resources and implantation techniques were described and variables such as side effects, cause of removal and acceptability were analyzed. The importance of asking for medical advice to improve the degree of acceptance of Norplant was also shown. The main side effects proved to be: headache, amenorrhea and abnormal uterine bleeding. Many of the patients who did not accept this method did it due to these reasons. The first cause of removal was the change of character. The method was accepted by most of the patients and there was no failure. The test of differences between proportions and that of x2 were used with a level of significance = 0,05.
