A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to characterize diabetes mellitus in 52 patients from a universe composed of 2 189 inhabitants that received medical attention at 5 family physicians' offices corresponding to "Tula Aguilera" Teaching Polyclinic, in the municipality of Camagüey, from January 1st, to December 31st, 2000. Data were collected through a survey done by the authors of the research and it became the primary registry. Data were computerized. The main results showed that there was a prevalence of 2.36 %. The age group 60-80 predominated with 63.46 % of the total of the sample. It was also observed a prevalence of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (90.38 %). It was concluded that females were the most affected, that the antecedent of diabetic mother predominated and that obesity was the most common risk factor.
