Abstract

OSORIO ILLAS, Lisis  and  PAISAN RIZO, Wendy Miguel. Characterization of the fundus oculi alterations among hypertensive patients in a Venezuelan community. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2006, vol.22, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3038.

A descriptive retrospective study was undertaken in 114 patients categorized as hypertensives at 2 family physicians' offices of Mission Barrio Adentro located in the rural community of Monterralo-Pueblito, in Piar municipality, State of Bolivar, Venezuela, from September 2004 to January 2005, to go deeper into the role played by arterial hypertension in the development of retinal alterations. All the patients were evaluated from the general and funduscopic point of view. It was found a predominance of females with a higher incidence in individuals over 60. Of the studied patients, 58 presented some degree of retinopathy and the highest number showed initial degrees of retinopathy. The greatest amount of funduscopic affections was observed in moderate hypertensive patients and with 10 years or over of evolution of the disease.
