Abstract

NUNEZ HERRERO, Laura  and  YANES CALDERON, Margeris. Organic cytology: fear or lack of knowledge. Rev Cubana Med Gen Integr [online]. 2007, vol.23, n.2. ISSN 0864-2125.

A comparative longitudinal case-control study was conducted in 110 females. 55 of them did not undergo the organic cytology (study group) and the rest did (control group). The aim of this study was to analyze some of the biopsychosocial factors that conditioned the denial behavior towards the cytological examination at “Ana Betancourt” Teaching Polyclinic, in Playa municipality, Havana City , during 2005. Variables such as educational level, groundless symptoms, fear to the result of the test (diagnosis) and fear to undergo the test were analyzed. The results served to establish a community intervention plan to reduce the number of women refusing the test, to improve the early diagnosis of cervical cancer, and to lower the female mortality from this cause. A social impact will be attained this way.

Keywords : Organic cytology; cervical cancer.
