Abstract

INTRODUCTION: competence is the possibility to integrate a set of functions and structures of different levels of completion and of culmination moments that if are directed to a profession or activity may be improved, integrated and coordinated in a functional way. OBJECTIVE: to determine the specific competences to offer a integral care to elderly suffering of dementia syndrome, according to the requirements of current community care model. METHODS: a cross-sectional, descriptive and exploratory study was conducted over 2008. A group work was developed with key informers offering a specialized care to elderly from the different health offices from tree polyclinics of the Eastern extreme of Playa municipality applying different group techniques including the storm and the ideas writing, which, together with the experience and the knowledge of each participant, allowed the achievement of the proposed objective. RESULTS: as main theoretical contribution it was determined a set of competences allowing that specialist of integral general medicine may to care in an appropriate way the patient suffering of dementia, essentially aimed to the early and correct diagnosis of this frequent health problem in elderly. CONCLUSIONS: authors defined a competence system in terms of knowledge, abilities and an attitude allowing that specialist in integral general offers the successful care to patient suffering of dementia syndrome.
