Results obtained with the first experience with the application of the state exams in the specialty of Stomatology during the academic course of 1995-1996, are reported. This is a new study program (plan C) to train basic general stomatologists. The objectives, purposes, and guidelines of the Cuban Public Health oriented to enhance the level of the population health, require a series of decisions, and measures among which the training of professionals with a broad profile and a solid theorical and practical basis are essential. Such professionals should have a professional competence and performance that will allow them to susccesfully solve the main health problems of primary care. In the previous academic courses (plan B), a final exam was performed in comprehensive Stomatology which together with the evaluation of the rotations in research and the different specialties represented the final mark of the student. The implementation of the new plan of study (plan C) results in the need of searching a new approach of integrality, so the state exam will be applied as the form for the completion of the studies in this specialty based on the evaluation of competence, and professional performance to face an oral health problem affecting the subject individually and the whole community. The results in general were satisfactory.
