BELLO FERNANDEZ, Nilda and ZUBIZARRETA ESTEVEZ, María Magdalena. Experiencia y resultados en la formación del licenciado de enfermería en Cuba, 1976-1998. Educ Med Super [online]. 2001, vol.15, n.3, pp.242-251. ISSN 0864-2141.
The health care provision levels reached in Cuba, the development of the medical education, the technical-scientific advances and the social needs, especially the health care needs of the population, led to a change in the formation of nursing manpower and as of 1976, the university studies in nursing were established. The basis is the conception that the curriculum allows to prepare a Bachelor of Nursing with sound knowledge, scientific and human approach, who will be capable of efficiently solving the health problems of the individuals, the family and the community and of applying the nursing care process. This paper shows the antecedents and fundamentals of the curriculum design for the formation of the Bachelor of Nursing as well as the theoretical-methodological basis, and the characteristics of the curricula that have been in two modalities: regular day course and regular course for workers. As a result of the formation of the nursing staff, there are 15 302 graduates and a roll of 11 125 students in all the higher medical education centers of Cuba in the 1997-1998 school year.
