Abstract

The paper provides the results of a descriptive study of physician-patient communication as part of the ethical-professional formation. The paper is based on the analysis of the compliance with the three functions of communication and empathy as mechanism of mutual understanding, through perception and assessment of 124 students and 43 professors at different years of the medical studies. Reference is made to ethical professional formation as an objective present in normative documentation of the teaching process and in methodological activities. It substantiates the need of an adequate physician-patient communication centered on the emotional function to achieve a quality medical assistance. The results showed that there is a limited contribution of the teaching process to an adequate physician-patient communication on the part of the students and this is considered to be associated to a poor ethical-professional formation. Recommendations are made because of the importance of this aspect for the quality of graduates from Medical Sciences and for the satisfaction of the population.
