Abstract

The historical evolution of higher medical education in Cuba from the triumph of the Revolution to the year 2004 was analized in a qualitative and quantitative way. There were approached aspects that allowed to know the development attained in the training of medical professionals before 1959, the exodus of doctors and the accelerated training of the new ones, the introduction of medical training in the National Education System and its mission, legal basis and financing, teaching aids, teaching modalities and curricula, network of teaching centers, body of professors and workers, participation of students and of political and student organizations in the teaching process and fellowships. Weaknesses, strengths and challenges were stressed. It was concluded that in this period due to the educative policy developed there were advances in higher medical education that have never been achieved in Cuba during 443 years of colonization, U.S. interventions and mediatized republic. Other aspects will be dealt with in the next publication.
