Abstract

This paper continued quantitatively and qualitatively analyzing some aspects of the historical development of higher medical education in Cuba from January 1st 1959 to 2004 to find out the advancement made in this sphere. The following elements were assessed: registration, extracurricular activities, academic surveys, institutional tests, graduates, academic performance, student´s movement, social service provided by graduates, Latin-American School of Medicine project, graduate course education, institutional testing, improvement, master´s courses, virtual teaching, sabbatical year, Ph D, scientific research, internationalism, universalization of universities, the work with political and mass organizations and the impact of the economic crisis period. It underlined weaknesses, strengths and challenges and concluded that at this phase, the Cuban higher medical education reached significant advances compared to those achieved in almost 4 centuries and a half of colonial domination, American interference and US-dependent republic.
