Abstract

A bibliographical review of the Royal  Board of Protomedici of Havana, a body created in the colonial period by the Spanish monarchy aimed at controlling the activities related to the public health in its vast domains, is made. It reached the category of State Board. An important stage in the development of medicine in Cuba started with  the creation of this institution in Havana, in the XVIII century, since during the two previous centuries the situation of medical assistance in Havana was deplorable. The objective of this paper is to give a brief explanation of the fundamental aspects of the Royal Board of Protomedici. Its origin and creation, as well as its jurisdiction, composition, functions and its most outstanding members are stressed
