OBJECTIVE: to assess the clinical competences developed by the students that finished the pregraduate internship at "Dr. Ignacio Chavez" Faculty of Medical and Biological Sciences, in San Nicolás de Hidalgo, México. METHODS: the evaluation was made through the structured objective clinical examination, which overcomes many of the limitations of the traditional written and oral test. That's why; its use has increased at the pregraduate and medical specialty levels in México and other iberoamericans countries. RESULTS: interpersonal skills got 6.7 points, clinical competences, excluding interpersonal skills; 4.6 points; and clinical diagnosis; 6.1 points, which showed the need to continue working in the curriculum redesign of the pregraduate interns. CONCLUSIONS: the structured objective clinical examination had a content value, and it was considered better than the traditional test used for pregraduate interns.
