Abstract

A prospective descriptive study about the introduction in “Frank País” International Orthopedic Scientific Complex of a current technique for the treatment of chronic paralysis of the serrato anterior muscle, published in the international literature, was conducted. The sample was made up of 5 patients who had been seen at the hospital from June, 2001 to June, 2002. The patients underwent a surgical treatment consisting of transfer of the sternal head of the pectoralis major muscle to the vertebral edge of the scapula. Two patients were females and 3 males aged 28.8 years as an average, with range of 17-40 years. The average time of development of lesion before treatment was 17.8 months, with a range of 13-22 months. The abduction average of the patients´ shoulders before treatment was 78° but after treatment, abduction average reached 171°. Results were excellent in 2 patients (40%) and good in 3 patients. The applied treatment had no complications.
