Abstract

A descriptive, prospective and cross-sectional study was carried out with all the patients (eyes) with diagnosis of presenile and senile cataract that received surgical treatment with the technique known as cataract surgery microincisions at the Centre of Ocular Microsurgery from January 2004 to January 2005. 27 patients were selected by randomized simple sampling. Most of the studied individuals were over 48 years old. The visual acuity with correction attained improved as an average in 5 lines according to Snellen's test, with an average induced astigmatism of 0.15 D. The average time of ultrasound used was lower than a minute, proportional to the nucleus' hardness. The loss in the endothelial cellular density was of 10.58 %. There was a low number of complications. The rupture of the posterior capsule and the vitreous projection were the most common compllicatio
