Abstract
MEJIA CRUZ, Nashelly I.; NARANJO FERNANDEZ, Rosa Ma.; MENDEZ SANCHEZ, Teresita de Jesús and CASTILLO PEREZ, Alexeide. Results of intraocular lens implantation in children. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2007, vol.20, n.2. ISSN 0864-2176.
This paper described the results of the intraocular lens implantation performed in children, who had been seen at the Pediatric Ophthalmologic Service of " Ramon Pando Ferrer " Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology and had been diagnosed as having cataract of various etiologies, from April 2002 to April 2005. They were all followed-up for a year. Some parameters like the patient’s age, the etiology of cataract, visual acuity, pre-operative and post-operative refractive defect were considered in our study. The dioptric power of the most common intraocular lens and the most frequent complications during and after surgery were identified. The patients requiring additional treatment such as laser capsulotomy and surgical membranectomy were finally evaluated. The intraocular lens implantation at early ages was related to good surgical results, better corrected visual acuity, and astigmatism was the most common refractive error. The most observed transoperative and postoperative complication was inflammatory membrane whereas the most frequent postoperative complication was opacity in the posterior capsule.
