Abstract

PONS CASTRO, Lucy et al. Stereopsis in patients operated on from intermittent exotropia. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2012, vol.25, n.2, pp. 280-287. ISSN 0864-2176.

Objective: to describe the stereoscopic visual acuity in patients operated on from intermittent exotropia. Methods: a prospective descriptive study carried out from January 2009 to December 2010 at the pediatric ophthalmology service of "Ramón Pando Ferrer" Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology. Seventeen patients aged 5 to 10 years, who had been operated on from intermittent exotropia and with best corrected visual acuity greater than 0.4, were studied. Those variables such as age at the time of surgery, sex, angle of deviation in prism diopters (PD) and near stereoscopic visual acuity measured by the TNO preoperatively and after 6 months. Results: there was predominance of males (58.8 %) and the 8-10 years-old age group. Surgery succeeded in 5 to 7 years of age group (100 %); the levels of stereoscopic visual acuity improved significantly after ocular alignment and the presence of stereopsis increased the chances of motor success. Conclusions: the functional motor outcome in the future will be better as the surgery is performed earlier. It was shown that the visual stereoscopic acuity remarkably improved after surgery, whereas the patients without stereoscopic visual acuity preoperatively do not achieve stereopsis.

Keywords : intermittent exotropia; angle of deviation; stereopsis.
